Three Words
I have just read of the vicissitudes of some young Afghan girls who, when suddenly and quite maliciously denied an education, desperately resorted to absolute basics in order to keep on learning - even in what are generally considered dangerous circumstances.
If that wasn't impressive enough, when one of them was asked how she would describe herself in three words, she responded:
UNBROKEN • STUDENT • WAITING*
As we say in Nigeria, three absolutely "loaded" words.
Taken separately, they could convey any number of things.
However, put together they shout of resilience, patience, dedication, courage, and an unshakable hunger for what has been denied yet remains tangible.
I was both heartened and humbled by all their stories.
Firstly because 'hope' - any which way you describe it - is deeply rooted in their stance.
And secondly because I can recall all the times I have been tempted to give up when faced with just a fraction of their impossible situations.
Three words.
The ones I would have thoughtlessly uttered before reading that post?
troubled • tired • anticipative...
Right now?!
I have bitten my tongue and forcefully swallowed dissatisfaction and discouragement, daring instead to holler:
CALM • TRANQUIL • SANGUINE
Unimaginable- not at all.
Somewhat difficult to achieve - certainly.
Attainable - by the grace of God, always.
Bottom line, troubles (along with the fatigue that inevitably accompanies them) will come but eventually go when a negative attitude concedes to the workings and promises of El Hanne'eman - the God who is faithful.
Dare I ask, which three words are you likely to rethink right now?!
